For Mama

I’m only the second generation born in Spartanburg on my father’s side of the family, but my mother’s side has been here, well as long as anybody, or longer. My mother’s side were all farmers until the mills came and they all worked there until the mills were gone. Now they do what we all do, try to get by however we can. My parents divorced early and I grew up with my grandparents in Glendale, splitting my weekends with my parents. Those were some of the best days of my life and I cherish those memories. I still ride through Glendale almost weekly and not much has changed other than most of the houses have been clad in either aluminum or vinyl. My Grandmother and all her sisters all lived within walking distance; they all dipped Rosebud snuff, worked very hard on swing shifts in the various mills in Spartanburg, and enjoyed watching “their stories.” They were, and are the kindest, most loving, and quick-witted people I have ever known, and I love them deeply.
